Britain’s No.1 tennis player Andy Murray has been honoured with an OBE on The Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.

The world No.3 has just completed his best tennis year in 2012 having won a gold and silver medal at his home Olympic Games at London 2012 before going on to become the first Briton to win a Grand Slam men’s singles title in 76 years by claiming the US Open in September.

The 25 year old wrote on his Facebook page: “It is with incredible pride that I have been named in the New Years Honours List to receive an OBE from Her Majesty the Queen for Services to Sport. 2012 has been an amazing year for British sport and I am proud to have been able to play my part. I reached my first Wimbledon final, competed and won gold at the London 2012 Olympics with Team GB at Wimbledon, and then won my first grand slam title at the US Open. Being recognised in such a way at the end of such a great season is the finishing touch on 2012. Thank you all for your support, I hope everyone has a very happy New Year…..and here’s to 2013!”

LTA President Peter Bretherton said: “Many congratulations to Andy for this thoroughly deserved recognition, not just of an outstanding year, but for all of his hard work over many years to become an Olympic and Grand Slam champion, and the impact that he has had as a role model to inspire more people to play tennis.”

There was also an MBE awarded to Andrew Gairdner, who retired this year as chief steward at Wimbledon after 34 years of working for the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
